Cherry Coal Mine Disaster

One of the most tragic coal mine fires in history. This story is very interesting. If you'd like to know more, please readwritten by Karen Tintori, a descendant of one of the victims, who tells the story of the mine and what happened to those 12 men who were trapped in the mine for days.

Hi Ladies,

What a trip to find The Cherry Mine Disaster and TRAPPED on your blog. Thank you for remembering these young boys and men who lost their lives in our country's worst coal mine fire.

This coming November will mark the centennial anniversary of the tragedy. Descendants and mining families will gather in Cherry to mark this historic anniversary.

Cherry still ranks as the worst coal mine fire in U.S. history and our country's third worst coal mine disaster for loss of life.

People don't realize that even today, half of our energy in the U.S. is generated by coal.
